Cosmetic dentistry includes several procedures like teeth whitening, full mouth reconstruction, smile makeovers et al. Teeth whitening, for instance, can be done at home as well as in the dental clinic. At home, it involves the use of dental whitening trays. These are custom made in the dental laboratory after giving an impression of the teeth and gums to the dentist. The trays are taken home, smeared with some whitening gel or lotion on them and worn over the teeth and gums. This is done for a given duration of time each day for a given number of days. Slowly, but surely, the teeth start to whiten. However, this procedure is not permanent, and teeth which have thus been whitened can easily become re-stained and yellowed if they are not taken proper care of.
Teeth whitening can also be done in the clinic. For this, first, the teeth need to be prepped up. Then a whitening lotion is smeared over them. A laser light of a given intensity is passed over this for a given duration of time. This will enable the whitening lotion to get somewhat glued onto the surface of the teeth, thereby, whitening them. This causes the teeth to whiten by a few degrees or grades. This, too, is not a permanent procedure since teeth can start staining or yellowing again.
What are cosmetic dentures?
Dentures, in essence, are false teeth. These can be partial or full. However, there is a bit of an issue with them since these need to be replaced after every five to seven years as they may become loose or ill-fitting with time. Also, they had to be removed each night and placed in a jar of a cleansing solution to which a cleansing tablet has been added.
Cosmetic dentures are to be brushed with this cleansing liquid or even with some soap or a dental toothpaste meant for this purpose. Dentures are devices which can be spotted easily. A person does undergo some facial features’ change with these since they are a bit apparent. This is not so much the case with dental implants. Implants are more natural and akin to the original set of teeth of the patient. Also, they need not be removed at all since they are permanent fixtures in the mouth. Also, if they are cared for properly, they can last the entire lifetime of the concerned patient. Implants, basically speaking, are titanium screws which are placed or drilled into the jawbone. The jawbone grows around them naturally, and they become firmed up in their places within about three to four months. A dental crown or cap is placed atop the titanium screw to function as the tooth which the world sees. The implant just needs to be shown to the dentist on periodically so that some minor adjustments can be made to them. Other than that, there is no other kind of treatment which is required after they are in place.
